Arts of Japan series : print #1 - more keyblock carving

A very long day of work on the block today ... not all that many square centimetres involved, but actually quite a lot done:

Here's a closer view; I had hoped to get this figure completed today, but the yawning took over before I could get the face done. I'll come at it 'fresh' tomorrow morning ...

I notice that you are not chopping off his foot as the original did. :)

Actually the original didn't. The copy I showed the other day is the one stored in the Library of Congress, and has certainly been knocked around a bit. It may be removed from the original book - I can't tell.

The British Museum has a copy of the original book itself, which is apparently in much better condition. Their version includes his foot (which I traced for my own copy.)

Once we get to colour preparation stage, I'll be showing both originals, because there are some (uniquely) interesting differences between the two versions ...

Ooh, fascinating! I can't wait to read about it.
