NHK News

This was a big one - an eight-minute long interview/display in the NHK National morning news program - live! This was just before the final exhibition of the 100 Poets' series, and must have helped to bring in a ton of visitors.

The two interviewers were very much 'pros', and guided me through this very smoothly. A camera crew had visited my workshop a few days previous, and some of this was played during the broadcast, and we talked/explained while it played. These guys know how to do it!

Because they were worried about the weather - possible train delays from snow - they arranged for me to stay in a hotel near the NHK building the night before. When I arrived at the studio early in the morning, I found that they had built a wall-size display to show a number of the prints. The carpenters were still working on it right down to the deadline, and I guess they perhaps hadn't had quite enough time, because when myself and the two 'hosts' were seated in place, ready to start ... we had a near-disaster. One of the producers had called, "15 seconds ... quiet please ...", and just at that moment the whole thing started to fall forward onto us. Before it could hit us, people in the back must have grabbed it, and then held on tightly, freezing in place during the broadcast. Once the red light went off, everybody relaxed, and it was lowered safely to the ground. Live!
