August 29

Filming for the 'Tokoro Kawareba' TV show, which they tell us will be aired on the 21st of next month. My segment comprises one sixth of the 55 minute show. The filming this time was much more concise than previous experiences. They brought a very clear idea of what they wanted, including a script, and simply went down their little list, shooting each segment in turn. The entire spot on the program revolves around the alcohol used to mix some of the colours, and there will be nothing else included. The viewers won't even be told that I'm making a Hyakunin Isshu series, etc. Anyway, at least they didn't waste much of our time (it was over in three hours, including lunch). Perhaps it will lead to something.

During the filming, pasted down the hanshita for Ise no Taifu [2-8], and started carving. This block is soft!

August 30

Carving and doing the final preparation of the newsletter copy. A few days ago I asked Ashida-san to write out the title with her brush, but she hasn't brought it back yet. I'm just waiting for that, and then it's off to the printer. Yamashita-san recommended a place in Ome, and I'll try them instead of the local outfit. No matter how much I'm expecting them to charge for a job, they always manage to stun me with the bill. I guess they've got to pay for their fancy big building. Maybe this new place will be in a back lane somewhere.

They are in a back lane! Ashida-san brought round the stuff this morning, and I pasted it down and headed for the print shop. The place Yamashita-san had recommended weren't able to do the job, as they don't even have a camera (they just do meishi and stuff), but they pointed us to a local outfit down a back lane. It's a dingy building full of Heidelberg presses and friendly people. They quoted just under 50,000 yen for 500 copies, which I would have thought was kind of high in Canada, but is a welcome relief here. It will take a week. Fingers crossed.

We also stopped off at 'Gallery Mon' to confirm the exhibition dates for next January, and pay the deposit. This will be a step up from last year's affair at the little rent-a-room in Fussa, and there will even be space for demonstrating. I'll hang the new 10, and have a standing display of the previous 10. Last time we had 98 attendees, and three new subscriptions. This time?
