October 1

Meeting in the morning of 'Baren', the local hobby printmaking group, to arrange some details of the coming culture festival displays. A few of them are interested in helping out with the booth I will be running for kids to try printing. It's set for the 29th.

Prepared a new hanshita for Chunagon Asatada [1-7], and pasted it down. It still gave me problems, but it is basically legible, and it's time to get going...

Got a letter from Matsuzaki-san, with a invitation to visit him and Susumu Ito at the Arakawa-ku Culture Day Exhibitions next Sunday. Of course I called him back and agreed to meet him there. I only hope that it won't be so crowded that I won't get a chance to talk to them ...

October 2-3

Number seven - here we go ... but unfortunately, not a very good start. It's been a few weeks since I did any carving, and when I tried sharpening the knives, I just couldn't reproduce the keenness that I had managed to get while doing the last print. I must have used up about a centimeter of blade over these past two days, trying to find the right angle and edge, but it still eludes me. It's especially frustrating, because I had it just a couple of weeks ago, but in the intervening 'time-off' (translating, teaching, ...) I've forgotten what I learned from the carver in Kyoto. Hopefully, a bit more practice will bring me back to where I was ...
