Step One ... (notes below)

All printing in the classical Japanese tradition starts with the keyblock, and this print is no exception. But please don't think of this as the 'black' block; this is actually printed in a light grey tone. The 'real' black will come later ...

Also worth noting - although not very visible in this small scan - is the delicate hair carving all around the edge of his head. I mean that you should 'note' it now, because at a later stage, nearly all of this hair will be buried under overprintings ... :-)
