I'm not sure where Mr. Fletcher could possibly have ever seen this. I have shown this illustration to many Japanese carvers, and got nothing but laughs in return. In the traditional Japanese method, there are no 'U'-shaped gouges used 'by hand', but only rather larger ones used with a mallet. The only chisels used by hand are small flat, slightly bull-nosed ones.
