The [Baren] and the [Burin]

Wood ... a cutting tool ... ink ... paper ... Those are the common elements that we find whenever we look at how any woodblock print has been made. But in actual practice, woodblock printmaking is not so easily 'unified' into such a simple categorization. In just what method was the tree trunk cut into pieces for the printmaker? It makes a very big difference ... Just what kind of tool was used to create the marks on the wood? It makes a very big difference ...

The world of woodblock printmaking is actually two worlds - woodcuts, and wood engravings. Here, to 'face off' and compare these two worlds, are (in the left corner) woodcut printmaker David Bull and (in the right corner) wood engraver Andy English.
